Long before televisions, computers, and the internet took over entertainment and leisure, temple and church dance forms were integral to Kerala culture. Days and weeks were marked for festivals, and the revelry and celebrations spread into every nook and corner of each neighbourhood, irrespective of religion. Theyyam is one such art form of Kerala.

The colours of the dances and festivals brought joy and peace to people; ask any elder in Kerala, and their eyes will grow dreamy with evergreen nostalgic memories. The emotionally charged atmosphere created by the incredible Kathakali dancers, the satire generated by the talented dancers of Chakairkoothu, the simplicity of wit, humour, and presentation of Ottanthullal, and Theyyam, the ritual dance of the Gods of India, are all unique dance forms of Kerala that will never vanish in the sands of time.

When Is Theyyam Season?

Theyyam season begins in late October and runs through May. December through April are the peak months. Early mornings and late nights are the most common timings at temple courtyards. Kerala Tourism publishes an updated Theyyam calendar each season. Check out our Kerala tour packages for scheduled performances by location and date before you travel.

Where to Watch Theyyam?

Here are some incredible places to watch Theyyam in all its glory.

1. Kannur — The Heartland of Theyyam

Kannur is Kerala’s primary Theyyam hotspot, with notable performances at the Kali temple in Mathamangalam and Palottu Kavu in Keecheri. The district is home to hundreds of kavus, and during the season, performances happen across the district almost every day. The DTPC (District Tourism Promotion Council) publishes an annual guide listing performance dates and locations—particularly useful if you want to plan around a specific form, such as Agni Theyyam, where the dancer enters fire.

2. Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple, Kannur

The single best option for visitors with limited time. Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple is one of the few places in Kerala where you can watch a Theyyam ritual every single day of the year — not just during the season. The temple is dedicated to Sri Muthappan, a deity unique to North Kerala, and welcomes people of all faiths. You can reach it by road or by boat along the Valapattanam River.

3. Kasaragod — Community Kavus and Ancestral Homes

Kasaragod is known for vibrant Theyyam traditions performed at kavus and the ancestral homes of the Thiyya, Nambiar, Vaniyar, and Maniyani communities—offering a more intimate, less tourist-facing experience than Kannur. Key areas include Manjeshwar, Kumbla, Cheruvathur, and Pilicode, each with its own noted shrines.

4. Kali Temple, Mathamangalam

One of the most visited and accessible Theyyam venues near Kannur town. Multiple Theyyam forms are performed across the season, making it a reliable destination even without a fixed calendar in hand.

5. Wayanad — Rare Tribal Variants

Wayanad offers unique Theyyam variations performed specifically by Kalanaadi people — forms that differ visibly in character and ritual from the North Kerala canon. For travellers already heading to Wayanad, the Mananthavady Taluk is the area to explore.

6. Kozhikode (Vadakara and Koyilandy Taluks)

The Vadakara and Koyilandy taluks of Kozhikode feature Theyyam performances during temple festivals and special occasions — less frequent than Kannur or Kasaragod, but worth timing around if you’re in the region.

7. Mallom Kollom Temple, Kasaragod

A distinctive venue in the hilly Mallom village on the slopes of the Western Ghats. This temple is notable for its Muslim Theyyams — forms like Ali Chamundi and Bapuran Theyyam, where a Hindu performer enacts Muslim characters and recites verses from the Quran. A rare, living example of how Theyyam embodies cross-community devotion.

Practical Tips for Visitors

Dress modestly. Temple conventions apply at all kavus.

Arrive early. Most of the spectacular Theyyam performances take place at night or before dawn.

Photography. Photography and videography are generally allowed, but seek permission before more private or sacred moments during the performance.

Check the calendar. Schedules vary by temple and year. Use the Kerala Tourism Theyyam calendar or the Kannur District portal for updated listings.

Go to the kavu, not a cultural centre. Village temple performances are the real thing — unscripted, unrepeatable, and free to attend in most cases.

Final Thoughts

Theyyam is more than folklore; it’s a fantastic display of enactments, with performers moving to powerful dance rhythms and intense expressions. The positivity emanating from these dance forms will totally mesmerise the viewer. When the performers enact their dances through impossible and very flexible moves, breaking coconuts with their heads and jumping into the sacrificial fire and coming out of it unscathed, you know you’ve seen it all.

The energy of Theyyam, the vibrations that devotees and tourists feel at the height of the festival, is definitely something you should experience at least once. If you are planning a trip to Kerala between December and April, add Theyyam to your itinerary.

Kerala, the land of rich cultures, has long been home to many varieties of dance forms.
