It is held annually at the Arattupuzha Temple\u00a0in the\u00a0Thrissur District\u00a0of Kerala. The Pooram is also called \u201cDevamela\u201d as 23 deities from various temples in the neighboring areas are brought together for the celebration.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keralatourism.org\/festivalcalendar.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">festival calender published in Kerala Tourism website<\/a>, Arattupuzha Pooram 2015 will start from April 1st.<\/p>\n<p>The festival is celebrated in a grand manner at the Sree Sastha temple which is\u00a0situated at Arattupuzha\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a serene\u00a0village about\u00a015km away from Thrissur town. Hundreds of visitors throng the village of Arattupuzha during the festival time to be a part of the celebrations. The festival lasts seven days,\u00a0with the last two days being the most important. One the eve of the final day, heavily decorated elephants are assembled\u00a0along with percussion artists for the ceremony called Sasthavinte Melam.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2808 size-full\" title=\"Sasthavinte Melam\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paradise-kerala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/arattupuzha-pooram-trichur.jpg\" alt=\"Sasthavinte Melam\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paradise-kerala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/arattupuzha-pooram-trichur.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.paradise-kerala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/arattupuzha-pooram-trichur-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><br \/>During the\u00a0Sasthavinte Melam, the entire venue is brightly lit with traditional lamps and huge flame bearing staffs called Theevetti. The percussionists\u00a0comprising of Panchavadyam, Pacharimelam and Pandimelam play\u00a0jubilant beats to keep the rhythm going. The richly ornamented\u00a0elephants are also present bearing Muthukkudas (sequined umbrellas) and Venchamarams (white whisks) to entertain the crowd.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2812 size-full\" title=\"Arattupuzha Temple Pooram\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paradise-kerala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ArattupuzhaTemple-lPooram.jpg\" alt=\"Arattupuzha Temple Pooram\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paradise-kerala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ArattupuzhaTemple-lPooram.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.paradise-kerala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ArattupuzhaTemple-lPooram-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>After this ceremony, the elephants that are carrying deities from\u00a0nearby shrines\u00a0move towards the neighbouring paddy field and are lined up before a jubilant\u00a0crowd. By sunrise on the last day, the elephants with the deities\u00a0are taken to a\u00a0river nearby \u00a0for the Aarattu ceremony. This is a ceremonial cleansing of the deities that is done by immersing the idols in the river,chanting mantras and offerings flowers to the deities. The celebrations start 5 days earlier with the Thiruvathira Purappad where the Sastha is taken out of the sanctum sanctorum accompanied by five elephants. After the rituals, it is taken to the\u00a0Thaikattussery temple to witness the pooram at Thaikattussery temple.<\/p>\n<p>An elephant race will also be conducted at the Pidikkaparambu Temple on the day prior to the\u00a0Arattupuzha Pooram, after which the Sastha is taken back to\u00a0Arattupuzha. A group of more than 250 percussion artists display their talents followed by a fireworks show. The ceremony culminates with\u00a0the\u00a0Arattupuzha Sastha coming\u00a0outside to\u00a0bids farewell to all visiting deities.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Arattupuzha Pooram festival season is\u00a0very opportune time to visit Trissur.
