Rameshwaram is a small village located on Pamban Island. The town connected to the mainland via the famous Pamban channel. Rameshwaram considered as one of the holy places of the Hindus. The famous Ramanathaswamy temple is located in the centre of the town and dedicated to Lord Rama. At Rameshwaram, Lord Rama decided to atone for his sins; he was keen to seek penance after having killed the Ravana. Rameshwaram have an essential role in the history of India. The importance of Rameshwaram is due to the various temples of Load Shiva and Vishnu, along with different holy water in and around Rameshwaram. Sre Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the significant temples in Indian history; this temple is famous for the Dravidian style of architecture. This temple is renowned for its collection of Lingas, made up of sand, salt, stone and other elements. And also known for its intricate works, majestic towers and corridors this temple is a fine example of architectural excellence. Massive walls surround this temple on all four sides. Outer halls of Rameshwaram temple is the longest in the world, with a total length of 3850 feet for all the corridors. There are around 1212 pillars in the outer hall, and the central tower of Rajagopuram has a height of about 53 meters. Another striking feature is the paved way from western gopuram to Setumadhava shrine is in the form of a chessboard, presenting a unique view.
This temple situates in Dhanushkodi, and it is lined along the shallow beaches, Historical memories and vast horizons of an azure sea. This temple holding the deities of Rama, Lakshman, Sita & Hanuman is believed to be the residing spot of Vibhishana, the younger brother of Ravana. This ancient temple is also known for the fact that it withstood the massive cyclone of 1964. The history of the temple depicts on the temple walls. We can see images of Goddess Sita, Lord Rama, Lord Lakshmana, Lord Hanuman and Vibhishana at the temple. This temple is a ruin of the temple described in Ramayana.
Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple, the five-faced Hanuman Temple, is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Belief is that Lord had revealed his five faces here; hence the idol of Hanuman is depicted with five faces.5 face means Hanuman in the middle along with faces of Lord Narasimha, Lord Adivaraha, Lord Garuda and Lord Hayagriva on the sides. Another major attraction of this temple is the ‘floating stones’. They use these floating stones for building the floating bridge named Sethu Bandhanam, from Rameshwaram to Lanka. Ancient people carve this famous idol out of a large Senthooram Stone which was considered very precious in ancient times.
Also known as Kushi beach and located in Palk bay. It is a popular site for relaxing and spending a few moments amid scenic beauty. Dhanuskodi lay in the southern tip of Rameshwaram and bordered by the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. The main attraction of the beach is a fantastic blend of unlimited deep blue water of the ocean along with the vast stretch of shores. This beach also famous for surfing activities. When viewed from a bird’s eye, Dhanushkodi or ‘end of the bow’ where the seas are in the shape of a bow and arrow is faintly visible Rama Sethu Bridge. Sometimes Lankan coast is visible, which just 30 km from Dhanush Kodi.Here we can enjoy the first light of the morning (sunrise) and the sundowning (sunset).
The Adam’s Bridge or Rama Setu is a historic bridge connecting the Rameshwaram island of India to the north-western coast of Sri Lanka. The bridge builds with limestone shoals that start from Dhanuskodi, the tip of India’s Pamban Island. Currently, the bridge is about 3 – 30 feet underwater and is unfeasible for any kind of use because of most of the parts leading to submersion by cyclones. Another name of this bridge is Adam’s Bridge which was given by a British Cartographer. Rama Setu described in many ancient texts, including religious scriptures as well as research books and maps that make this monument one of the important visiting places for pilgrim travellers.
Water Bird Sanctuary is home to a lot of native as well as migratory water birds this sanctuary also named Arichamunai Bird Sanctuary. During the winter season, this place becomes the home to several migratory birds like flamingos, gulls and the birds from European countries and Australia breed. Between October and January, the sanctuary turns into a battalion of migratory birds who flock here to breed and feed their offspring’s .it is an absolute paradise for birds lovers. The best time to sight the birds is in the early morning hours or the evening.

Agnitheertham is one of the essential holy water and receives a large number of pilgrims each day. Located on the beachside of Sri Ramanathaswamy temple, it is the only holy water located just outside of the temple. Agnitheertham has been mentioned several times in the ancient texts, and that’s why it considers as a pilgrimage of significant importance among the Hindus pilgrims. The belief is that bathing in this sea will rid once sins and make them pure. On the shores of this pristine beach, holistic rituals such as those for the dead ancestors performed.
It is the longest bridge in southern India, and it connects Rameshwaram Island to the mainland. Another name is Pamban Bridge; it is a cantilever bridge on Palk Strait. The ships too can pass under the bridge because it’s fantastic double-leaf bascule which raises itself to let ships pass from underneath it. The bridge has 143 pillars, each of which is 220 feet long and weighs 100 tonnes. It is an absolute architectural wonder.
