Varkala

Varkala Beach

Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasam Beach, is a beautiful long stretch of sand. The beach is famous for the unique feature that it has the striking cliffs that fringe one end. The water of Varkala Beach regarded to own medicinal and curative properties. Dip in the holy waters at this beach is believed to remove the body of impurities and the soul of all sins; hence the beach known 'Papanasam Beach'. Janardhanaswamy Temple

Ponnumthuruthu Island

Ponnumthuruthu, also known as Golden Island, is located 20 km from Varkala. This Island is an unspoiled green space that's perfect for nature walks, and bird-watching, exotic migratory birds, rare water birds and other wildlife make this paradise for birds lovers. The Island also has a century-old temple dedicated to Shiva and Parvati.  It situates amongst thick coconut groves. During Shivratri, a lot of devotees gather in the temple to spend the night in prayers. The only way to get here is to hire a boat from Nedunganda Village; the cruise to the Island is in complete harmony with nature and keeps people rejuvenated.

Varkala Lighthouse

Varkala Lighthouse was built in 1684 by the British. This lighthouse built to assist the navigation of ships coming from Britain.  It stands 130 feet tall and has around 250 stairs located on the Varkala Beach. This lighthouse offers mesmerizing bird's eye view of the Arabian Sea and the backwaters. It is a perfect attraction for photographers and beach lovers. The lighthouse is open for just a couple of hours. It is the best point for those who love to explore adventure

This aquarium helps to witness the various species of fishes in the aquarium which viewed from a walkway that spirals upwards. One can find several species including scorpion fish, angelfish, koi and more. Anjengo Fort

Anjengo Fort situated 12 km from Varkala. Anjengo Fort is one of the historical monument of European architecture and offers inspiring views of the sea, hills and greenery from the lighthouse.  Anjengo Fort was built in the late 17th century by the East India Company and was gifted to the company by the Queen of Attingal. The National Heritage monuments protect the fort. This place has majestic architectural marvel, situated in a picturesque setting. Compared to the other forts in Kerala, Anjengo fort lacks some typical look and characteristics of a fort. The Island is very small in area, sandwiched between the sea and backwaters, but it has high relevance in the history of India.
