About Bekal

Bekal is a small coastal town in Kasaragod district, at Kerala's northernmost tip, set along the Arabian Sea between Kannur and Mangaluru. Its centrepiece, Bekal Fort, was built around 1650 by Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi and later passed through several regional powers before coming under British control. Spanning roughly 40 acres, with nearly three-quarters of its perimeter facing the sea, it is Kerala's largest fort and one of the state's most visited historical monuments, declared a special tourism area by the Government of India in 1992. Around the fort, Bekal's beaches, including Kappil and Pallikere, offer quieter alternatives to Kerala's more crowded southern coastline, while the Valiyaparamba backwaters, fed by four rivers a short drive north, add a scenic boating experience. Inland, Kasaragod district's mix of communities and languages, often described as "Sapthabhasha Sangamabhoomi" or the land where seven languages meet, is reflected in sites such as the Ananthapura Lake Temple, Chandragiri Fort and the Malik Deenar Mosque, making Bekal a good base for exploring the wider Kasaragod coast.

Ideal Duration

Spend 1–2 days in Bekal to enjoy the fort, beaches and a backwater or temple excursion without rushing.

Honeymoon Tips

Choose a sea-facing or hilltop stay near the fort and plan time for a sunset walk along the ramparts and a quiet evening at Kappil or Pallikere Beach.
