Gavi Travel Guide: Rainforest, Lakes & Forest Department Eco-Tourism
Gavi is a remote eco-tourism destination within the Periyar Tiger Reserve, straddling central Kerala's Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts. Reached via winding forest roads that cross several dams and check-posts, Gavi offers dense evergreen forest, a scenic lake, and a chance to spot wildlife like elephants, gaur, and Nilgiri langurs, all managed through controlled access by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation. Trek through untouched rainforest, boat on Gavi Lake, spot wildlife on a jeep safari, or simply take in one of Kerala's most pristine landscapes. Because access is permit-based and limited, Gavi works best as a planned, pre-booked day trip or overnight stay rather than a casual stop, and pairs naturally with a wider Thekkady or High Range itinerary.

About Gavi
Gavi is a small eco-tourism destination tucked inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, spread across the Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts of Kerala's Western Ghats. Surrounded by evergreen rainforest, tea estates and the Ranni reserve forest, Gavi remained largely unknown outside Kerala until the 2012 Malayalam film "Ordinary" was shot here, after which it drew wider attention as a pristine, tightly regulated nature destination. Because it falls within restricted tiger reserve territory, the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) controls access to Gavi through its eco-tourism programme, requiring entry permits, vehicle registration, and checkpoint clearances at forest posts along the way. The drive in, whether from Vandiperiyar, Kumily or Pathanamthitta, crosses several dams and winds through misty hill roads, and is considered one of the region's most scenic drives. Once inside, Gavi's attractions include boating on Gavi and Kochupampa lakes, treks through dense forest, spice garden walks, and wildlife sightings that can include elephants, gaur, sambar, the lion-tailed macaque and, rarely, a tiger or leopard, alongside more than 250 recorded bird species, making it a genuine wilderness experience rather than a conventional sightseeing stop.

Combine a day or overnight stay in Gavi with Thekkady's Periyar Tiger Reserve, boating and spice plantation tours for a fuller Western Ghats wildlife experience.
How to Reach Gavi
Gavi has no airport or railway station and sits inside a restricted forest area, so access is entirely by road and requires pre-arranged permits through the Kerala Forest Development Corporation.
By Air (Flight Connectivity)
- Cochin International Airport and Madurai Airport are both roughly comparable in distance to Gavi, depending on the exact route taken, with Thekkady and Kumily as the usual staging points.
- Taxis and private transfers from either airport typically route through Kumily or Vandiperiyar before the final forest stretch to Gavi.
By Rail
- Kottayam and Chengannur are the more commonly used railway stations for travellers heading to Gavi via Vandiperiyar or Pathanamthitta.
- From the railway station, travellers typically take a taxi to Kumily or Vandiperiyar, then continue into the forest with a booked KFDC vehicle or permit.
By Road
- Gavi is around 14 km southwest of Vandiperiyar and around 28 km from Kumily (Thekkady), reached via the Vallakkadavu forest checkpost.
- An alternative, often more scenic route runs from Pathanamthitta via Angamoozhy, crossing the Moozhiyar and Gavi dams, a journey of around 100 to 110 km.
- Entry is strictly controlled: vehicle details must typically be registered in advance, checkposts have cut-off entry times (usually around 11 AM), and self-drive access is allowed only with a valid KFDC booking or permit.
Best Time to Visit Gavi
A seasonal guide to help you plan a Gavi trip around pleasant weather, wildlife sightings and forest access.
Post-Monsoon
October – NovemberRain eases, the forest is lush and green, and visibility for wildlife sightings improves, making this a rewarding period to visit.
Winter
December – FebruaryCool, misty mornings and comfortable daytime temperatures make winter the most popular season for treks, boating and wildlife spotting in Gavi.
Summer
March – MayWarmer days bring animals closer to water sources, which can improve wildlife sightings, though the heat makes early mornings the best time for outdoor activity.
Peak Season
December – JanuaryPleasant weather and holiday travel make this period busier for bookings, so advance reservation with KFDC is especially important.
Monsoon
June – SeptemberHeavy rain affects road conditions on the approach to Gavi and can lead to stricter access restrictions or closures at forest checkposts, so avoid this period unless you confirm access in advance.
Places to Visit in Gavi
Explore Gavi's forest, lakes and wildlife trails as part of the Kerala Forest Development Corporation's managed eco-tourism programme.
Gavi Lake
The centrepiece of the Gavi eco-tourism area, this forest-fringed lake is used for boating as part of KFDC's day and overnight packages, offering quiet views over the surrounding hills and tea estates.
Kochupampa Lake
A second, smaller lake within the Gavi eco-tourism zone, Kochupampa also offers boating as part of the managed programme and adds another scenic stop within the forest circuit.
Rainforest Trekking Trails
Gavi's forest trails, accessible only with KFDC guides as part of booked packages, lead through dense evergreen rainforest with chances to spot wildlife and observe the region's rich birdlife.
Wildlife & Birdwatching
Gavi's forests are home to elephants, gaur, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, the lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur and, rarely, tigers and leopards, along with more than 250 recorded bird species, making it a serious destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Paradise Cove, Ninnumulli
A scenic forest viewpoint within the Gavi eco-tourism circuit, Paradise Cove is included in some of KFDC's guided packages.
Spice Gardens & Cardamom Factory Visits
As part of the managed eco-tourism experience, visitors can walk through spice gardens and visit a cardamom processing facility, offering insight into the Western Ghats' cash crop economy alongside the forest scenery.
The Scenic Drive to Gavi
The drive itself, whether via Vandiperiyar or the longer, more dramatic Pathanamthitta route crossing the Moozhiyar and Gavi dams, is considered one of Gavi's defining experiences, winding through misty hills, tea estates and dense forest.
Thekkady & Periyar Tiger Reserve (nearby)
Just a short distance away, Thekkady and the main Periyar Tiger Reserve offer boating on Periyar Lake, spice plantation tours and additional wildlife experiences, making for a natural extension of a Gavi visit.

Gavi Travel Tips
Weather Reality
Gavi is cool and often misty, especially in the mornings and during winter, with heavy rain from June to September that can affect road access. Carry light woollens, rain protection and sturdy walking shoes.
Local Transport
Gavi has no local public transport; you'll move on foot along guided trails, by boat on the lakes, or by vehicle as part of a KFDC-arranged programme.
Ideal Duration
A single day is enough for the standard KFDC day package, while an overnight stay allows for an early-morning trek when wildlife is most active.
Booking Essentials
Gavi access is permit-based and managed almost entirely by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation. Book your day visit or overnight stay in advance through KFDC's official channels, since walk-in entry is not guaranteed and forest checkposts have strict entry cut-off times.
Good to Know
In most cases, entry requires registering vehicle details in advance, and checkposts typically stop allowing entry around 11 AM. Carry a valid ID, confirm your booking details before travelling, and avoid planning a Gavi visit during heavy monsoon rain given the condition of forest roads.
