Kannur Travel Guide: Beaches, Forts & Theyyam Traditions
Kannur is a coastal district in northern Kerala's Malabar region, along the Arabian Sea, known for its long, uncrowded beaches, colonial-era forts, and the ritual art form of Theyyam. Its coastline includes Payyambalam Beach and Muzhappilangad, Kerala's only drive-in beach, while inland attractions range from St. Angelo Fort to the Arakkal Museum and the Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple. Drive along the sand at Muzhappilangad, watch a Theyyam ritual, explore Malabar cuisine, or learn about the Arakkal royal family's history. With its own international airport and good rail links, Kannur works well as a standalone break and as part of a wider Malabar coast holiday.

About Kannur
Kannur is a coastal district in Kerala's Malabar region, set along the Arabian Sea in the state's north. Historically an important centre of the spice trade, and visited by travellers such as Marco Polo, Kannur was later contested by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, and it carries a strong layer of maritime history alongside its beaches and backwaters.
Built by the Portuguese in the early 16th century, St. Angelo Fort overlooks Mappila Bay, while the Arakkal Museum tells the story of the Arakkal family, Kerala's only Muslim royal dynasty. The district's coastline includes Payyambalam Beach, Dharmadam Beach and Muzhappilangad, known as Kerala's only drive-in beach with a firm sandy stretch of several kilometres. Kannur is also one of the best places in India to witness Theyyam, a ritual dance form combining elaborate costume, music and mime, performed at temples and sacred groves across the district through much of the year, with a daily ritual at the Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple. Add in handloom weaving traditions, Malabar cuisine and nearby hill viewpoints, and Kannur offers a fuller picture of northern Kerala beyond its beaches.

How to Reach Kannur
Kannur is well connected by air, rail and road, making it one of the more accessible destinations in northern Kerala. The city has its own international airport, and Kannur Railway Station is a major stop on the Malabar coast rail line.
By Air (Flight Connectivity)
- Kannur International Airport (CNN) is the nearest airport, serving domestic flights and a growing number of international routes.
- It is a convenient gateway to Kannur city, Muzhappilangad, and Bekal without a long road transfer.
- Taxis and private transfers are available from the airport to Kannur and nearby areas.
By Rail (Train Network)
- Kannur Railway Station is well connected to major cities across Kerala and to destinations further afield along the Konkan and Malabar rail routes.
- Thalassery Station (~20 km) is a useful alternative for reaching Muzhappilangad and nearby beaches.
- From the railway station, travellers can continue around Kannur by taxi, auto-rickshaw or local bus.
By Road (Cab, Bus & NH 66)
- Kannur is well connected by National Highway 66, which runs along the Kerala coast and links it with Kozhikode to the south and Kasaragod and Mangaluru to the north.
- KSRTC and private buses connect Kannur with Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Bekal, Wayanad and Bengaluru.
- Taxis and private cars are convenient for covering the district's spread-out beaches, forts and temples.
- Road travel makes it easy to combine Kannur with Bekal, Wayanad and other parts of the Malabar coast.
Best Time to Visit Kannur
A seasonal guide to help you plan a Kannur trip around pleasant weather, Theyyam season, beach time and sightseeing.
Post-Monsoon
October – NovemberRain eases, the countryside stays green and Theyyam season begins around late October, making this a good window to combine sightseeing with early ritual performances.
Winter(Best Season)
December – FebruaryDry, comfortable weather and little rain make winter the most popular season for beaches, forts, and Theyyam viewing, which peaks between December and March.
Summer
March – MayHot and increasingly humid days make early mornings and evenings the best time for outdoor sightseeing. Theyyam season continues into May at some temples before pausing for the monsoon.
Peak Season
December – MarchDry weather and the height of Theyyam season make this the busiest period for visitors interested in culture and beaches.
Monsoon
June – SeptemberHeavy rain brings lush scenery but disrupts beach activities and outdoor plans. Theyyam performances largely pause during this period and resume around late October.
Places to Visit in Kannur
Explore Kannur's beaches, forts, museums and temples for a mix of coastal relaxation, colonial history and living ritual tradition.
Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach
Muzhappilangad is Kerala's only drive-in beach, with a firm sandy stretch of around 4 to 5 km where visitors can drive two-wheelers and four-wheelers along the shore. Black rocks scattered along the coast create calmer patches of water, making parts of the beach suitable for swimming.
St. Angelo Fort (Kannur Fort)
Built in 1505 by the Portuguese and later held by the Dutch and the British, St. Angelo Fort is a triangular laterite fort on a promontory overlooking Mappila Bay. Its ramparts, bastions and observation points offer sweeping views of the Arabian Sea and the fishing harbour below.
Payyambalam Beach
A long, relatively uncrowded beach close to Kannur city, Payyambalam is a popular spot for an evening walk, with a beachside park and views out to sea. It sits within easy reach of the town centre.
Arakkal Museum (Arakkal Kettu)
Housed within a section of the former Arakkal palace, this museum showcases the history of the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal dynasty in Kerala, along with artefacts related to their rule and their historic role in the region's spice trade.
Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple
Set on the banks of the Valapattanam River, this pilgrim centre is known for the daily Theyyam ritual performed in honour of Muthappan at dawn and dusk throughout the year, unlike most Theyyams, which are strictly seasonal. The temple welcomes worshippers of all backgrounds.
Dharmadam Beach & Island
Dharmadam is a scenic beach with a small, easily reachable island just offshore, accessible on foot at low tide or by a short boat ride. It is a quieter alternative to the more visited beaches nearby.
Thalassery Fort
Built by the British East India Company in 1703, Thalassery Fort is one of Kerala's notable colonial-era structures, now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The surrounding town of Thalassery is also known as the birthplace of the Malabar-style biryani and the martial art Kalaripayattu.
Theyyam Ritual Dance Performances
Theyyam, Kerala's ritual dance form combining dramatic costume, face painting, music and mime, is performed at temples and sacred groves across Kannur throughout the season. Visitors interested in witnessing a performance beyond Parassinikadavu can check with local guides or the tourism office for temple schedules, since timings vary by location and season.

Honeymoon Tips
Choose a sea-facing stay and plan time for beach walks, sunset views at St. Angelo Fort and relaxed evenings by the coast.
